Umeco Composites Structural Materials Companies Demonstrate Materials Developments for the Renewable Energy Sector - 3rd May 2011

Advanced Composites Group Ltd (ACG), Richmond Aerovac and GRPMS, all members of Umeco Composites Structural Materials (UCSM) – a Division of Umeco plc, will be co-exhibiting on Stand T30 at the 2011 ALL-ENERGY show in the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre - Bridge of Don, Aberdeen on the 18th and 19th May 2011.

ACG will be demonstrating the application of its prepregs for wind turbine blades, Richmond Aerovac will be exhibiting its vacuum bagging process materials intended for the manufacture of wind turbine blades, and GRPMS will be presenting products for repair patch and subsequent insitu repair work.

The stand will feature a quarter scale Slipstream Energy S6i Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, the full scale version of which will be used for wind energy generation applications in urban locations. The S6i turbine blades have been made from ACG’s carbon prepregs, employing VMS2, a revolutionary new product developed by Richmond Aerovac, in the vacuum bagging process.

Richmond Aerovac work alongside their customers to improve their processes and add value. VMS2 is a resin barrier vacuum line developed to reduce the risk of dry spots in laminates. This revolutionary product opens up new possibilities in composite structural design, reducing the risk of rework and optimising process control and part quality.

ACG has developed a range of standard and rapid layup prepreg formats targeted specifically at large structures in the alternative energy market. Building on its successful MTM®57 Series prepregs, ACG has developed two new 80 to 120°C curing variants, MTM®57-2 and MTM®57-3, which offer specific process advantages for renewable energy applications.

ACG’s complementary VTM®260 Series of vacuum-only processing structural prepregs can also be used for blade manufacture. VTM260 Series variable cure temperature prepregs offer excellent handling and processing characteristics across a range of reinforcements. These prepregs and their associated adhesives, surfacing films and syntactic plies can be co-cured.

ACG’s MTM57 and VTM260 Series prepregs are available in standard prepreg and ZPREG® rapid layup, selective impregnation formats.

Representatives from ACG, Richmond Aerovac and GRPMS will be on hand to discuss specific requirements and advise on appropriate materials for the full spectrum of material applications across the alternate energy sector.
